Nature Staycation

When thinking of holiday most people immediately think of going abroad as well, no matter what they want to do during their vacation. Travelling to other countries in order to experience nature and various cultures is certainly something wonderful and exciting. But sometimes the own country has to offer unique treasures, natives just don’t see anymore because they are always present and thus no longer attractive. Especially Austria’s nature has so much to offer, that it is a real pity to go abroad for a hiking or ski trip. No matter what season, there is always something to do in Austria’s alpine upland.

Salzburg attracts lots of tourists around the year. The beautiful and unspoilt countryside is probably the most important resource for Salzburg’s tourism sector. The Hohe Tauern national park is the largest of seven national parks in Austria and covers an area of 1,800 square kilometres. It offers tourists a magnificent landscape that is not comparable to any other in the world. About one third of the national park’s area was put under protection in order to make the effects of tourism less harmful to the environment of the region. Main reason for the special protection still is the environmental protection and the maintenance of traditional life in the Alps. Although most of the Hohe Tauern national park is under protection, the area does not seek to exclude tourists. The nature preserve offers skiers as well as hikers thousands of places to enjoy their holiday.

Besides cultural tourism and sightseeing in the city, the summer season in Salzburg is especially popular for cycling and mountaineering. Hiking routes include easy slopes for beginners as well as high alpine tours for more advanced hikers. The highest mountain of Salzburg is the Grossvenediger with a height of 3,674 metres. It belongs to the Hohe Tauern that is especially attractive for technically advanced mountaineering and also climbing routes. As mentioned before, cycling is the second most popular sport in Salzburg after mountaineering. No matter if you prefer steep slopes or unhurried bike trips, there are thousands of routes that suit everyone’s demands. The Tauern cycle path is probably the most popular one in Salzburg. With 30,000 cycling tourists every summer season, it is the second most popular long-distance cycle path in Austria. Only the Danube cycle path attracts even more tourists every year. According to the official Salzburg webpage, “2000 kilometres of maintained cycle routes and 3000 kilometres of mountainbiking-trails are available in Salzburg province for bike lovers.” (link: http://www.salzburg.eu/en/tourismus/sommertourismus.php)

For people who seek a more relaxed form of tourism, Salzburg’s beautiful Lake District is certainly a perfect choice. Staying in the city of Salzburg, it takes just about twenty minutes to get to the countryside with its diverse and beautiful landscapes. The Salzburg Lake District comprises four lakes: Wallersee, Mattsee, Grabensee and Obertrumer See. Since the Austrian Alps are that close to the Lake District, it is an unique nature spectacle not comparable to any other site of the world. “The Salzburg Lake District -paradise in the foothills of the Alps- is the ideal place to spend the vacation for families and active senior citizen.” (link: http://www.salzburger-seenland.at/en/salzburg-lake-district/our-region)

Although the summer season has a lot to offer, Salzburg is still especially well known for its winter tourism. More than half of every year’s tourists come to Salzburg during the winter season to enjoy its snowy landscape. Ski resorts in Austria are considered by lots of people as the most attractive ones in the world, so many tourists visit Austria regularly for skiing trips. Salzburg has to offer 2200 kilometres of skiing slopes in 22 skiing regions spread around the whole region. About 2000 kilometres of cross-country trails perfect the skiing paradise for enthusiastic winter tourists. Top regions for skiing holidays in Salzburg are the Hohe Tauern national park, Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang, Großarl and Ski madé.

More and more people are looking to Nature as an escape from the hustle and bustle and stress of daily routine. The longing for originality, regeneration and relaxation , - either living temporarily in the natural surroundings of the Lake District or enjoying the regional culinary specialities, - is top priority for holidaymakers. Through the Salzburger Land, there leads a pathway called Via Culinaria that consists of seven different routes all offering culinary delights high-end. The seven routes certainly offer something for everybody. According to the Kulinarium Salzburger Land (link: http://kulinarium.salzburgerland.com/kg/eng/index.html), the culinary pathways offer enjoyment for: Gourmets, Fish Fans, Beer and Schnapps Aficionados, Sweet Tooths, Cheese Freaks, Meat-Eaters and Hut Lovers. The culinary pathways are referred to as “Genusswege” in German; they are an absolute must to visit for everybody who enjoys good food. Besides the Via Culinaria, Salzburg has to offer its very special coffeehouse tradition. Every sweet tooth certainly gets his money's worth when ordering one of several delicious cakes the city has to offer. Even Mozart was a regular guest of the coffee house Tomaselli that is well known for its good coffee, but especially for Salzburg’s famous apple strudel.
