Staying or moving: the charm of camping

If you’ve ever spent your vacation camping, you’ll agree that this kind of recreational pursuit involves a blend of charm and magnetic attraction. The charm of a camping site lies in the fact that it radiates freedom, calmness and happiness all at the same time. At camping sites you see lots of different people: backpackers, parents with young children, parents with older children, elderly couples, etc. But campers can actually be narrowed down to two sorts of people: those who stay and those who move away.

The first kinds are the ones who prefer a luxurious kind of camping. They pack their four wheel drive SUV, put the kids and the dog inside, hitch up their 7- metre-long caravan, and steer a course for a luxurious camping site called Camping Du Mar somewhere in southern France. Equipped with a huge fridge to store daddy’s favorite local beer, shelves for mommy’s glossy magazines, a flat screen television and the Xbox 360 for the kids, these movable homes offer them every luxury they need. Unbelievable but true, their caravans   are often better equipped than their two-story brick houses in their hometown. These folks want to really settle down at their camping site and make themselves comfortable for the next three or four weeks. They occasionally leave the grounds of Camping Du Mar to discover the next town and do some sightseeing, but they only do this so that they are  able tell their friends at home that they ‘did’ something and are now experts on the region they spend their summer holidays at year after year. This adventurous trip outside the camping grounds isn’t  necessary at all, since Camping du Mar has everything they need: a beach, three swimming pools, a supermarket, a disco, a movie theater, a library and most importantly an entertainment team comprised of beautiful, enthusiastic French women. They not only entertain the kids, they also offer a little eye candy for daddy.
The second kinds are vacationers who find total satisfaction in sleeping in a cold and damp tent sharing a mattress with bugs and mosquitoes. These are the adventurers and explorers. They love moving around during their vacation and detest staying in one place for too long. Totally different than their neighbors in their luxurious caravans, they don’t need much to be happy. A camping site doesn’t have to offer them everything because they are happy with what they have. And that isn’t much. They leave home with a small car packed to the roof with a tent, air mattresses and coolers and some basic groceries from their local supermarket.
These are the two kinds of campers you find on camping sites around the world. They are drawn by a longing for freedom and seek out the company of other campers. Together they are a wonderful blend of happy camping people.
