In a perfect world there would always
be sunshine, like in my last blog post. But what if the weather gods are not on our side? It is time to take
off our rose-colored glasses and let reality sink in. We live in Salzburg and
Salzburg isn´t just famous for Mozart but it´s also famous for Schnürlregen. (“rain
in strings”)
Taking
a stroll down the Salzach when the weather is the typical Salzburg Schnürlregen,
it seems that even the tourists try to hide out indoors. On each and every day
we would be happy if the groups of Chinese and Japanese tourists wouldn´t block
all the roads and bridges in the inner city. But on a rainy day I kind of miss
them. Even the Fortress seems sad in the grey and gloomy light. The rain puts a
filter on our view of life. What seemed bright and vibrant now looks dead and
empty. We all know the feeling of sadness when we wake up in the morning, draw
back the curtains and are met by little droplets of rain on our window. The
whole world is covered in gloominess. Nothing seems right; we can´t seem to
find the motivation to start the day.
Sunlight,
or more precisely UVB rays, are essential to our body for the production of
Vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced in our skin and is said to be an important
factor in producing happiness hormones. If there aren´t enough UVB rays our
body can´t produce enough Vitamin D, and therefore we lack our happiness
hormones. What are you gonna do if Vitamin D absorption through sunlight is not
an option due to a cloudy and rainy sky?
Since Vitamin D isn´t the only way to
improve our mood, we try to live life on the bright side – despite the weather.
If you are an outside person, just grab your rain boots, take some friends and go
for a walk. There is no bad weather, just the wrong clothes. You wouldn´t
believe how much fun a nice long walk in the rain can be and how refreshing it
is. Maybe you´ll even discover your inner child again and jump into some
puddles or dance in the rain. You won´t believe how good it feels. Don´t let
the bad weather drag you down.
Look on the bright side of life!
